Meet Our Psychologists

Ray Bodensieck, Psy.D.

Dr. Bodensieck has been licensed as a psychologist
since 1991. He has received his B.S. in Psychology from the
State University of New York at Oneonta. Following a year
working in mental health residence programs, he went on to receive
his Doctor of Psychology from the Chicago School of Professional
Psychology. Dr. Bodensieck's education and training
incorporates psychological concern from across the life span.
Post-graduate work has included: Astor Child Guidance,
Montgomery County Mental Health, and the UCP Early Intervention
Program. Dr. Bodensieck's orientation toward the treatment of
your children is from the temperament/developmental perspective.
In parent counseling, parents are helped to understand how their
child's temperament influences the way he or she interacts socially
and behaviorally. Adult psychotherapy usually follows the cognitive
or interpersonal perspective. Dr. Bodensieck also enjoys
working with clients on stress management and pain management.

Dr. Brent
is both a licensed psychologist (since 1991) and a certified school
psychologist (1991). She brings expertise in school issues to
her clinical work with families at KPA. She has taught
psychology at the college level for 15 years and has experience with
children, families and college age adults. she has also worked
with women and men on issues of transition, divorce, midlife changes
and caring for elderly parents.
Howard Cohn, Ph.D.

Dr. Cohn is a psychologist and
former special education teacher and Professor of Special Education,
with decades of experience specializing in developmental and
emotional disorders of childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood,
and learning and behavior problems throughout the life span. Dr.
Cohn also has years of experience in conducting general
psychological evaluations, court ordered evaluations for custody,
and evaluations for specific learning disabilities and attention
deficits.
John D. Kowalski, Ph.D.

Dr.
Kowalski earned his undergraduate degree in speech from the
Northwestern University and his doctoral degree in school psychology
from Fordham University in New York City. He has a license to
practice as a psychologist in New York State and has a permanent New
York State certification as a school psychologist. During the
day, he is a supervising psychologist in the Office of Clinical
Services at the Berkshire Farm Center where he maintains a caseload
of children and adolescent in residential treatment, as well as
trains pre-doctoral psychology candidates. Moreover Dr.
Kowalski has additional training in psychodynamic methodology in his
individual work as well as certification in using interactive
computer software to access and treat youths and adults struggling
with attention and learning difficulties. He is skilled in
areas of assessment, individual and family treatment. Dr.
Kowalski is fully knowledgeable of special education services
provided in public schools and has worked with families requiring
assistance with the unique academic and emotional needs of their
children and adolescents.
Shirley McMorris, Ph.D.

Dr. McMorris is a licensed clinical
psychologist with almost 20 years experience in psychotherapy. She
is also a registered professional nurse and has extensive background
in behavioral medicine, anxiety and depressive disorders, stress
management, and bowel disorders. Dr. McMorris was Associate Director
at Four Winds Hospital in Saratoga for many years and has expertise
in treating individuals, couples, families, and facilitating groups.
She developed an anxiety treatment track for patients needing a
cognitive-behavioral focus for treating anxiety disorders; she also
was the professional sponsor for many years for the hospital's
annual Anxiety Disorders Screening Day. Dr. McMorris trained at
SUNY-Albany's Center for Stress and Anxiety Disorders and did both
graduate and post-graduate work at this world-renowned Center… She
has spoken nationally and internationally on a variety of topics…
Dr. McMorris treats children, adolescents, and adults in her
full-time practice at KPA.
Stephen Phelps, Psy.D.

Dr. Phelps is both a licensed
psychologist (since 1991) and a certified school psychologist (since
1976). He has been with Karner Psychological Associates for 16
years specializing in work with children and families. Dr. Phelps
also sees adults and couples in his part-time private practice with
KPA. Dr. Phelps also is a school psychologist with the East
Greenbush Central Schools, and he has been a school psychologist for
29 years. As such he brings expertise in school issues to his
clinical work with families at KPA. Services include assessment,
short-term therapy, and consultation. Dr. Phelps specializes in the
following areas: developmental concerns, ADHD, educational
disabilities, adjustment disorders, mood disorders and relationship
issues.
David C. Thompson. Ph.D.

Dr. Thompson received his Ph.D. in
clinical psychology from The Pennsylvania State University in
1963. He also received his bachelor's degree and master's
degree from Penn State.
Since receiving his doctorate, Dr.
Thompson has been active in the field of psychology working as a
therapist, counselor, and program director in different
settings. For the past 15 years, he has focused primarily on
private practice work, providing counseling and related services to
individuals, couples, families, and children, to clients with an age
range from 8 to 80. His special areas of expertise include
helping people cope with depression, panic disorders, children and
family issues, relationship issues, and adjustment difficulties.
Dr. Thompson tailors his approach to
the needs of the client and the situation, but primarily relies on
cognitive/behavioral psychotherapy for informing and guiding his
clients.
