KPA Stress and Anxiety Clinic
What is Anxiety?
Anxiety is a common
complaint. Next to substance abuse, anxiety disorders are
the second most common mental health problem. One recent estimate
suggests 24 million Americans suffer from anxiety disorders. Nearly
five percent of women and two percent of men have experienced panic,
agoraphobia, or other phobias.
Following are the main categories of
anxiety treated by mental health providers. For more detail on a
specific disorder, click on that disorder's name. You will be taken
to an information page provided by the Anxiety Disorders
Association of America. These screening tools can be very
useful if you suspect that you, or someone you love, might be
suffering from an anxiety disorder. Certainly, if you are suffering
anxiety that is interfering with your life, you will benefit from a
consult with a mental health professional trained in the treatment
of anxiety. We can help.
-
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD): refers to
excessive uncontrollable worry about everyday things.
-
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD): is
characterized by uncontrollable obsessions and compulsions which
the sufferer usually recognizes as being excessive or
unreasonable.
-
Panic Disorder: develops when you have multiple
panic attacks and then become very worried about having another
panic attack (a panic attack is defined as the abrupt onset of an
episode of intense fear or discomfort, which peaks in
approximately 10 minutes.)
-
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): occurs
when the aftermath of a traumatic experience interferes with
normal functioning.
-
Anxiety Disorder (Social Phobia): is characterized by an

embarrassment may occur.
-
Specific phobias: involve the excessive fear of an object or a
