Dealing with Depression
What is depression?
Feeling sad, irritable, hopeless,
worthless, no longer enjoying life, low on energy, having trouble
sleeping and eating, thoughts of death or suicide... these can all
be signs of a serious depression.
Depression is one of the most common
mental health problems affecting people today. In any given one year
period, 9.5 percent of the population, or about 18.8 million
American adults, suffer from a depressive illness. Depression is
also a very treatable illness in the vast majority of cases.
Unfortunately, many people do not seek treatment, either because
they do not realize that they are suffering from depression, or
because they mistakenly believe that treatment either won't work or
is something to be ashamed of.
How can I get help?
Here at Karner Psychological
Associates, we help to accurately diagnose depression, and
then gently and professionally help you towards recovery. Treatment
usually consists of psychotherapy (counseling) sometimes combined
with medication. When medication is prescribed, your therapist at
KPA will communicate with the prescribing doctor to help insure that
you are making the needed progress.
How can I know if what I am
experiencing is depression?
The best way to clarify whether you
are suffering from depression, and to what extent, is to have a
diagnostic evaluation with a trained mental health clinician. Not
only will the clinician help you determine what is wrong, he or she
will also help direct you towards the best treatment options. Would
you like to take a preliminary screening test first? If the results
suggest that you are indeed suffering from clinical depression, or
if you just need to talk with someone about the distress that you
are experiencing in your life, please contact us for an appointment
at (518) 456-5056.
Don't let yourself or
someone you love suffer needlessly.
