This section provides information and guidance to parents regarding various concerns we face with our children.

Some of these concerns are related to the typical pressures of family life, some of the problems are due to serious mental health disorders suffered by our children. Does your child suffer from an emotional disorder?

Many children and families are affected by mental health problems. It is estimated that:

One in five children and adolescents may have a mental health problem.

At least 1 in 10, or as many as 6 million young people, may have a serious emotional disturbance. (Center for Mental Health Services, CMHS)

An estimated two-thirds of all young people with mental health problems are not getting the help they need. (Center for Mental Health Services, CMHS)

The American Psychological Association (APA) has an informative site written for the public that deals with many of the concerns faced by individuals today- regarding ourselves, our children, getting along in with others in this complex society, etc.

Between 7 and 12 Million American youth suffer from mental, behavioral, or developmental disorders at any given time. The AACAP (American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry) is the leading national professional medical association dedicated to treating and improving the quality of life for children, adolescents, and families affected by these disorders.

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) provides information regarding various mental health issues for the public ( in English and also informacion en espanol). Check out their pages on anxiety disorders, depression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, eating disorders, schizophrenia, and other mental health disorders.

For three decades, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) has established itself as the most formidable grassroots mental health advocacy organization in the country. Dedication, steadfast commitment and unceasing belief in NAMI’s mission by grassroots advocates have produced profound changes.

Children and Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (CHADD), is a national organization providing education, advocacy and support for individuals with AD/HD. In addition to our informative Web site, CHADD also publishes a variety of printed materials to keep members and professionals current on research advances, medications and treatments affecting individuals with AD/HD.
